A seroma is a lesser variant of a hematoma. Hematomas are produced by bleeding from the larger blood vessels while seromas are produced by bleeding from smaller blood vessels. While hematomas are pure blood and can coagulate, seromas are a bloody fluid that does not clot. The excess of hematoma or seroma can be removed by drains within the first few days following surgery or by local needle until the quantity of fluid left is less than 75cc. There will be some discomfort but the level depends upon the individual. Icing of the affected areas during the first post operative week is recommended. Local massage is helpful if possible (Arnica Gel will assist in the healing of the area while massaging) and finally, taking arnica montana and bromelain will help to reduce swelling and bruising. Avoid asparin or anything containing asparin as this tends to increase the problem. Always check with your surgeon before trying any of these treatments as he will be best informed about your particular situation.
